Ok i have never done this before... Jamaican law puts a man convicted of homosexualy acts in prisin for ten years no more. why is it that, this sentence is higher than that of a man who rapes? I was on 365gay and i came across a newsletter, and things are not going so well in this perceived "blessed country" My opinion is jamaican people are spending too much time opposing discriminating and harassing homosexual people when there are more important matters at hand. What is our prime minister doing? the jamaican justice system needs to be purged of those who use the fact that they because they work under the law that they have the right to do whatever they want to. How is it that the same people who constantly say "stay outta mi business" are the ones pushing their noses into other people's business? Pierre Trudeau, canadian political leader once said "the state has no place in the bedrooms of a nation" and i believe the same should apply. law protects an individual and states that their privacy should be respected, then how is it that you have individuals breaking down people's doors entering their homes their shelter, and beating them? i mean, where do they get off going to a man's funeral? Why is it ok to go to a murderers funeral, a rapist's funeral or a child molester's funeral but it isnt ok to go to a gay persons funeral? These individuals who constantly harass, beat and kill gay people, i can only say one thing and sum it up in one word: Illiterate. Jamaica's literacy rate is in the 80's why doesnt the goevernment focus on improving that? jamaica has one of the highest crime rates in the world. a negative definition of "likkle but them tallawah" if this continues i can guarantee, rest assured this will lead to nothing good. some jamaican people unconsciously are putting their ugly side out and this will only make it look bad on the whole country. try sittin on a bus, where when you tell someone you are jamaican, they say i'm scared to go to that country, jamaican people are ignorant nothing good, and you constantly make it harder for jamaicans living abroad, because people readily judge you on a stereotypical basis. jamaica's justice system is corrupt and this needs to be taken care of. too much time is spent worrying about things that can be tolerated. why are jamaicans so afraid of change? change is only for the better and i believe jamaican people need to step out of their plastic wrap. the only difference with homosexual people generally referring to lesbians gays bisexual transgendered and queer (lgbtq) is that they love different people. they are no different than anybody else out there who loves. their relationships are based on love trust and everything else. some of these police officers are sad examples of people who uphold the law. it is not ok to uphold with an angry mob who are beating and killing homosexuals. Corrupt system i tell you. reading the news only makes me feel sorry for this country. jamaica is not setting a very good reputation in the eyes of the outer world, and in turn this will affect their economy in turn affecting everything else. All men were born equal and should be treated as such. the bible also says THOU SHALT NOT KILL, and trust me it is not justified to kill people and say the bible says... and those very same people are not following the bible. Fornication is ok but homosexuality isnt? the bible speaks out against fornication but u do not see people being killed for fornicating. which in indulgin in the act of sex before marraige which is an abomination. the bible also says lying lips are an abomination and also happens to be one of the things god hates... yes,God hates things ( NOT PEOPLE) god hates seven things and homosexuality is not one of them. god loves everybody, and if u dont see god striking people down for being gay, then i dont see why people should decide to play god and take matters into their own hands. people should mind their own business and turn their attention to something of higher importance. and everybody should be treated like human beings, like how they would want to be treated. Law Abiding Citizens with Rights and as a jamaican living abroad, people can be treated better and they should be treated better. leave the homosexuals alone |

Couldn't have said it better.
-------------------- People ask me..."Why are you so angry?" I walk them towards the closest map / globe and point out Jamaica.

What an intense and insightful post. Unfortunately, there are plenty of people in this world who try to hide behind the bible while also attempting to use it as a weapon. A lot of people select passages that supposedly prove that god condemns homosexuality, but all it proves is that people don’t read very well. While hateful people often quote the story of Sodom to defend their narrow-minded view that same-sex sexuality is a sin, they miss the actual point of the story: rather than living in excess while others suffer and starve, people need to help each other. There are a lot of other passages in the bible that people ignore and fail to practice, such as “If a man dies childless, his widow is ordered by biblical law to have intercourse with each of his brothers in turn until she bears her deceased husband a male heir” which you can find in Mark 12:18-27. People pick and choose what suits their own personal agendas.
What seems to be happening in Jamaica is similar to what happens in America. If people really wanted to follow the bible, they would help each other out. But what they really want to do is select passages out of context to “prove” that hatred is okay. Why do they want to hate when the bible clearly and repeatedly states that we should fill our minds and hearts with love and acceptance for one another? Because hatred places the focus on a particular person or group of people which distracts everyone from the real issues. In America, for example, politicians love to bring up gay marriage to divide the nation and get everyone riled up. Instead of investing more resources in figuring out what to do about the war, about poverty or homelessness, or maybe even healthcare (tremendous problems), conservatives bring up issues of the nation’s morality. It’s not the government’s place to tell us what personal behaviors are “morally acceptable.” We should all have rights, no matter our identities or orientations, and it’s unjust for politicians to try to use us and our concerns just to win votes or to distract people from issues that affect a wider range of people. What are the issues in Jamaica that your leaders should be focusing on? Do religion and “morality” play a role? How can LGBTQ people around the world find a balance between demanding equal rights and dealing with or utilizing government involvement/ interference? |

Katrina88, most politicians in do not care for gay related issues as much as they pretend. However in the same way no politician want to be accused of being soft on crime no Jamaican politician want to be seen as gay tolerant in any way. they have to make statements like "not in my cabinet." With all the fuss about the new charter of rights and the Caribbean Court of Justice the one thing the prime minister and the leader of the opposition can firmly and publicly agree on is that homosexuals will never ever have any rights much less equal rights and never ever receive justice in Jamaica. To say otherwise would be political suicide. So in the end I can't even blame them. They are just giving the people what they want to hear. And besides it's always a convenient distraction from the real problems plaguing the country - crime and the failing economy. and by not yielding to external pressure to at least give gays some protection under the law or at most give us full rights, they make themselves out to be like the biblical hero David up against Goliath giving them even more mileage.
